There are several models of the brain, including anatomical models, models that describe brain function, and models that describe how people think:
-
Anatomical models
The brain is made up of the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem, and is divided into gray and white matter. The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain and is responsible for higher functions like speech, reasoning, and movement. The cerebellum is responsible for balance, posture, and muscle coordination. The brainstem connects the cerebrum and cerebellum to the spinal cord and controls basic functions like breathing and heart rate.

Brain function models
These models include modular models that can be compared to each other to identify which modules contribute to which explanatory successes.
-
Thinking models
These models include the triune brain theory, the left brain/right brain theory, and Herrmann’s whole brain creativity model. The triune brain theory divides the brain into the neomammalian (neocortex), paleomammalian (limbic system), and reptilian brain. Herrmann’s whole brain creativity model divides the brain into four quadrants and can help people understand their dominant and less-preferred thinking styles.
