Magnetic field demonstrations can be used to show how magnetic force is distributed in space, and to illustrate magnetic lines of force:
-
Iron filings and paperA classic demonstration involves spreading iron filings on paper and placing a magnet underneath. The iron filings will conform to the magnetic field lines.
-
Copper wires and iron filingsAnother demonstration involves connecting copper wires to a power supply and sprinkling iron filings over the wires. The iron filings will conform to the magnetic field lines.
Magnetic fields have many uses, including:
- Electricity: Moving a magnet around a coil of wire, or moving a coil of wire around a magnet, creates an electrical current.
- Magnetometers: These devices measure the Earth’s magnetic field, detect magnetic anomalies, and determine the dipole moment of magnetic materials. They are also used in aircraft attitude and heading reference systems.
- Credit and debit cards: The dark strip on the back of these cards is magnetic and stores data.
- Magnetic therapy: Magnetic therapy pillows and waistbands are used for this purpose.
- Iron removal: Magnetic iron removers can remove iron particles from flour.
- Boiler scaling: Magnetized water can prevent boiler scaling.
- Crop production: Magnetized seeds can increase crop production
