Windmills, or wind turbines, work by converting the kinetic energy of wind into electricity:
- Wind turns blades: Wind causes the blades of the turbine to spin.
- Blades spin rotor: The spinning blades turn the rotor, which is connected to a main shaft.
- Shaft spins generator: The spinning shaft spins a generator, which creates electricity.
The blades of a wind turbine work similarly to airplane wings. When wind blows, a low-pressure area forms on one side of the blade, pulling it towards the wind. This is called lift, and the force of lift is stronger than the drag force of the wind against the front of the blade
