Structure of an atom

The nucleus is the center of the atom and is made up of protons and neutrons. Protons are positively charged particles, while neutrons are electrically neutral. The number of protons in the nucleus is called the atomic number, which defines the element. 

Electrons are negatively charged particles that orbit the nucleus in shells. The number of electrons in an atom is equal to the number of protons in the nucleus
