Universal Force Table

A universal force table is a physics lab apparatus that lets you apply forces in different directions and study the effects of those forces:

  • Components
A universal force table has a circular table with a central ring, pulleys, and strings or cables attached to the ring.

  • How it works
You can apply forces by adding weights to the strings and adjusting the angles between the strings. You can also reposition the pulleys around the table.

  • Uses
You can use a universal force table to:

    • Verify the laws of triangles, parallelograms, and polygons of forces
    • Introduce students to the concepts of vector addition and equilibrium
    • Apply Lami’s Theorem, a principle in mechanics
  • Procedure
You can follow these steps when using a universal force table:

    1. Level the table using the foot screws and a bubble tube
    2. Apply forces to the strings
    3. Note the magnitude and direction of the forces
    4. Observe the angles between the forces
    5. Draw space diagrams and a force polygon
    6. Observe if the polygon is open or closed
